Heartland Announces Players of the Week

The Heartland Conference announced today that the following student-athletes have been named Player of the Week in their respective sports for events conducted Sept. 28 - Oct. 4, 2009.

Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Austin Hunt – Newman University / SO / Belle Plaine, Kan.
Hunt led Newman at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree, finishing 70th out of 239  runners with an 8K time of 27:16.9. Hunt and the Jets finished 16th in  the 32-team event.

Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Melissa Ortiz – Newman University / SR / Wichita, Kan.
Ortiz continued to write her own record book at Newman, posting a new  season-best 5K time of 18:52.4 at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree, and  finishing third out of 199 runners in the college division. Ortiz’s
third place finish is the highest ever by a Newman cross country runner at the event, which is the oldest cross country meet in the  country.

Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Lianah Flores – Incarnate Word / SR / MF / Harlingen, Texas
Flores had a great weekend for the UIW Cardinals, scoring three goals in two Heartland Conference games to help lead Incarnate Word to a 4-0  conference record. Against Dallas Baptist University, Flores scored  the first two goals of the night in a 3-1 UIW victory over the Lady Patriots and up against Texas-Permian Basin, she scored the first goal of the game off a header in the first half.

Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Claire Tilton – St. Edward’s / SO / GK / Sugarland, Texas
Tilton anchored the Hilltopper defense in a conference shutout victory  over Newman. In the match Tilton tallied four saves against the Lady  Jets to keep the Hilltoppers undefeated in conference play.

Volleyball Hitter of the Week
Courtney Trevino – St. Edward’s / SO / RS / Austin, Texas
Trevino helped the Hilltoppers move to 4-0 in Heartland Conference play, and pick-up two big non-conference wins, in a 3-0 week for St.  Edward’s.  Trevino had 42 kills over the three games and put down four  aces from the service line.  Her average of 4.2 kills per game was a major part of the Hilltoppers’ .202 hitting percentage on the week.

Volleyball Setter of the Week
Sarah Nordman – Incarnate Word / JR / S / San Antonio, Texas
Nordman posted 172 assists over four games for Incarnate Word, and averaged almost 10 assists per game. The Cardinals were 3-1 on the week, and Nordman played a key role in a big win over rival St.
Mary’s.  She also contributed five service aces and 30 kills during the week. Nordman earns the honor for an incredible fifth time this season.

Volleyball Libero of the Week
Michelle Hunt – St. Edward’s / FR / L / Double Oak, Texas
Hunt’s 60 digs, an average of 6.0 per game, over the Hilltoppers’ three matches last week, helped St. Edward’s improve to 14-5 overall and 4-0 in the Heartland Conference.
