The St. Edward’s men’s tennis team took down the strong regional opponent, Northwest Missouri State, 5-3, Sunday afternoon in Dallas.
St. Edward’s (6-6) stared in doubles-action with the No. 1 duo of junior Mick Walter and senior Boris Barrios deafeating Malcolm Harrison and Raphael Oliveira, 8-3. In the No. 2 match, sophomore Ned Boon and senior Brett Powers took down Vijit Sehgal and Ryan Westerhof, 8-5. The Bearcats were able to take their first point in the No. 3 match when Felipe Gennari and Daniel Quesada defeated senior Justin Raiti and sophomore Ryan Wiggins, 8-6.
Northwest Missouri (7-2) gained another point in the No. 1 with Malcolm defeating Boone, 7-6, 6-1. In the No. 2 match, #42 Powers defeated the #44 ranked Gennari in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Raiti followed with a point of his own in three hard fought sets against Vijit, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Calvin Petterson defeated Walter in the No. 4 match, 7-6, 6-3. Barrios took down Quesada in the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. The No. 5 match between senior Bernie Lancaster and Westerhof was unfinished.
Hilltopper coach Russell Sterns, was proud of the team stating, “Northwest is one of the better teams in the region and I believe that our tough opening schedule has really helped our play and overcome challenges. The doubles team of Walter and Barrios has been playing very well as well as Powers and Raiti leading our singles. We are optimistic in finishing strong against our remaining opponents.”
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday,as they host Heartland Conference rival, Incarnate Word. First-serve is set for 1 p.m
