#18 St. Edward’s Takes Down #23 Cameron, 5-2

The St. Edward’s men’s tennis team gained a big victory against regional rival Cameron 5-2, Thursday afternoon in Austin.

St. Edward’s (8-9) No. 1 duo of senior Boris Barrios and junior Mick Walter took the first point as they defeated Diego Troiano and Carlos Viscarra, 8-3. In the No. 2 match, sophomore Ned Boone and senior Brett Powers were defeated by Thomas Peixoto and Manue Barroetavena, 8-5. In the final match, the senior team of Justin Raiti and Bernie Lancaster defeated Jorge Gerosi and Jeff Sasser, 8-4 to give the Hilltoppers the 2-1 lead.

In singles, Boone took the No. 1 match against Troiano in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Powers followed in the No. 2 match against Viscarra. Powers took the first set, 6-1 as Viscarra fought to claim the second set, 6-4. In the final set, Powers pulled away for the point, 7-5. In the No. 4 match, Walter was defeated by Gerosi, 7-5, 6-4. In the No. 6 match, sophomore Ryan Wiggins clenched the victory for the Hilltoppers as he defeated Sasser, 6-1, 6-2.

The Hilltoppers move to 5-1 in the South Central Region and in the driver’s seat to host a regional match. Hilltopper coach Russell Sterns stated, “I am really proud of all of my seniors, they all stepped up and played very well.”

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday as they travel to take on regional opponent and 22nd ranked Abilene Christian. First-serve is set for 9 a.m.
