Abbott Named Heartland Woman of the Year

St. Edward’s Kimberly Abbott has been selected as the 2010 Heartland Conference Woman of the Year by the league’s Senior Woman Administrators.

Abbott, who graduated from St. Edward’s in May with degrees in mathematics and education, was a four-year starter for the Hilltoppers women’s soccer team where she was named a NSCAA/Adidas first team All-American her senior season.

While a student-athlete at St. Edward’s, Abbott completed hundreds of hours of community service and leadership activities, including work with the Casa Marianella Refugee Shelter, the Phoenix House, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and other groups.

Academically, Abbott was named to the Dean’s eight times at St. Edward’s.  She received the Robert Noyce Teaching Scholarship for aspiring math and science teachers and was named the most outstanding mathematics student at St. Edward’s last year.  Abbott also helped the St. Edward’s soccer team earn the sixth highest GPA in the NCAA last season.

On the field, Abbott was a part of two Heartland Conference championship teams (2006, 2007) and was named to the All-Heartland Conference first team three times.  She helped lead the Hilltoppers to the NCAA Tournament three times, while making the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history this year.

Abbott, a native of Missouri City, Texas, is the daughter of John and Marie Abbott. She will now be the Heartland Conference’s nominee for the NCAA National Woman of the Year award.
