Dallas Baptist's Kaylyn Frink and Armie Lewis have been selected as the winners of the 2009-2010 Heartland Conference Sportsmanship Award.
Frink and Lewis were chosen based on their consistent demonstration of good sportsmanship and ethical behavior in their daily participation in intercollegiate athletics. They have also demonstrated the values of respect, fairness, integrity and responsibility.
"The conference is pleased to honor these two student-athletes for their strong demonstration of sportsmanship," said Tony Stigliano, commissioner of the Heartland Conference. "Sportsmanship is a defining value in intercollegiate athletics and Kaylyn and Armie serve as excellent examples for other student-athletes and fans."
Frink, a junior volleyball player from McKinney, Texas, served as a captain for the DBU team. She was nominated for the award based on an incident during the 2009 season in which she approached a line judge, who was a student for the opposing team, after a particularly tough match and reassured him that he did a good job.
Lewis, a native of Houston, is a junior mens basketball player for Dallas Baptist. In the midst of a high-stakes conference game, with a possible trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line, Lewis' composure and leadership helped prevent a fight during the game.
Frink and Lewis join 2008-2009 honorees Scott Shimek of St. Marys and Lauren Zegarelli of Dallas Baptist as winners of the league's Sportsmanship Award.
