The Dallas Baptist University Lady Patriot Volleyball Team partnered with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to take part in a service project with the Dallas Independent School District on Saturday, August 28. Over 205 middle school girls from DISD participated in the instructional clinic, free of charge, held at the Kincaid Fieldhouse in Dallas.
The Lady Patriots taught volleyball skills to campers through different stations in the gym, but were also afforded the opportunity to share their faith athletes. Members from the Lady Patriot Volleyball Team spoke on being student-athletes at the college level, while still maintaining a life that is glorifying to God.
"This service project was one that is close to my heart,” said Head DBU Volleyball Coach Cathy Ray. “I truly feel young ladies need to stay active and participate in sports to help build their confidence. Having our Lady Patriots working and teaching right alongside the campers allowed for our team to be great role models and witnesses for Christ."
Most DISD middle school volleyball coach were present, showing their commitment to the development of their young athletes. Many coaches said they hope to visit the Lady Patriots during their upcoming 2010 season, in hopes of building on the relationships established on Saturday.
"I was so impressed by the way our team stepped right into coaching the young girls and showed so much compassion and motivation. Some of the students were deaf and the team did not falter for one minute and quickly learned ways to work with them as well. I am so proud of my team and their love for volleyball and the Lord,” Ray added.
