CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Fresh off its fourth place finish at the NCAA DII Women’s Golf Championship, the St. Edward’s women’s golf team continues to impress, as it was announced that four Hilltoppers were recipients of national awards from the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. Wallis Spears and Ryanne Haddow were both named second-team all-America, Haley Haught was named honorable mention all-America and to the West all-region team, and Jessica Tamen was this year’s winner of the Kim Moore Spirit Award.
Spears, who was named to the second team for the third-straight season, was second on the team with a 76.26 stroke average. The senior had seven top-five finishes, which included a victory at the Augustana Spring Fling, and a win-loss record of 725-131 (.847) She was named Heartland Conference Golfer of the Year for the third-straight season.
Haddow was a first-time national awardwinner in 2013, tallying a 76.26 scoring average and seven top-10 finishes. She won this year’s St. Edward’s Invitational and owns a 746-110 (.871) win-loss record. She was also named first-team all-Heartland Conference this year.
Haught, who leads the Hilltoppers in scoring average with a 76.23 average, was the team’s top finisher at the regional and national tournaments. She also owns a team-best 752-104 (.879) winning percentage. Haught had eight top-10 finishes and tied Haddow for medalist honors at the St. Edward’s Invitational.
Tamen, who was in the St. Edward’s lineup for the first six tournaments of the year as a true freshman, was forced to sit out the final seven events due to physical ailments. Her support and spirit for St. Edward’s women’s golf never waivered throughout the entire season and her fight helped inspire her team all season. She registered a 78.85 scoring average and her best finish came at the NCAA DI Sam Houston State Invitational where she was third.
The Kim Moore Spirit award’s purpose is to recognize and honor a student-athlete or coach who exemplifies a great spirit towards the game of golf, a positive attitude on and off the golf course, a role model for her team and mental toughness in facing challenges.
St. Edward’s had its best finish in school history by placing fourth at this year’s championship.
