HORSESHOE BAY, Texas - Senior Garrett Fey led Dallas Baptist to its second-straight Heartland Conference Championship as the Patriots edged out St. Mary’s by a single stroke at the 2016 Heartland Conference Championship.
DBU saw a 10-stroke lead over the Rattlers after round one dwindle to a single stroke heading into the final few holes where Fey’s even par in the final round proved to be the difference. St. Mary’s shot a round-low one-over-par 289 as a team to pull within striking distance.
Oklahoma Christian finished the tournament at 25-over-par to place third, while St. Edward’s finished at 30-over-par dropping from second to fourth. Lubbock Christian rounded out the top five with a 34-over-par.
Fey became the first golfer in conference history to win three-straight individual championships besting Lubbock Christian’s Scott Brown in a one-hole playoff on hole 18. Brown’s putt to force a second playoff hole spun around the edge of the cup and out giving Fey the record-setting win. Both players shot two-under-par for the tournament, and were the only golfers under par in the weather-shortened tournament.
