The long ball threat for The University of Texas of the Permian Basin will now be swinging his bat for the Atlanta Braves organization. In the 23 round with the 704 pick the Braves drafted UTPB sophomore Evan Gattis. Senior right-hander Jonathan Burns (Pflugerville, Texas) of the St. Edward’s University baseball team has been selected in the 26th round (794th overall) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Atlanta Braves. St. Edward's first baseman Dexter Moreno (Senior, Austin, Texas) added another post season honor to impressive resume on Thursday when he was named to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association 2010 NCAA Division II Gold Glove Team. Rawlings has been the longtime sponsor of the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region and All-American teams. The Rawlings Gold Glove has been the standard for outstanding defensive play in the Major Leagues for the past 52 years. Incarnate Word fell short in the South Central regional championship tournament suffering a 9-4 loss to Abilene Christian in a game that began in the early morning Tuesday. The semi-final, elimination game had its first pitch at 12:22 a.m. in Warrensburg, Mo., and did not end until 3:13 a.m. ACU earlier had defeated St. Mary’s in 13 innings to reach this point. The Wildcats now will contest unbeaten and first seeded Central Missouri for the right to advance to the Division II championship tournament. Ryan Luckie's RBI single in the top of the 13th inning was the difference as seventh-ranked Abilene Christian University rallied to defeat 30th-ranked St. Mary's University, 9-8, at the NCAA South Central Region Tournament at Crane Stadium. The game went back-and-forth with three lead changes and four ties, before the Wildcats finally took the lead for good in the 13th inning. The game was the longest of the season for the Rattlers, lasting 4:12. St. Mary's University baseball player Alfonso Maldonado was named NCAA Division II All-South Central Region by Daktronics Inc. for his play during the 2010 season, it was announced on Sunday. Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) was the Rattlers top starting pitcher, going 8-6 with a 2.91 ERA, 10 complete games and 2 shutouts in 102.0 innings of work. Opposing batters hit just .244 against him this season. He had 10 complete games in 16 starts this season. First Incarnate Word defeated number 10, then number seven, and now the Cardinals will play number three at the Division II South Central Regional championships. In the first round UIW defeated Emporia State. Friday night Incarnate Word won 5-4 over Abilene Christian, the nation’s number seven squad. Next up is a 3:30 p.m. meeting on Saturday against host Central Missouri, the number three team in the entire nation. These two are the only teams remaining undefeated in the double-elimination affair in Warrensburg, Mo. Matt Holland threw a complete game on the mound and the St. Mary's University offense came alive, led by Jonathan Cisneros, as the Rattlers rallied to defeat the University of Nebraska-Omaha, 8-6, on the second day of the NCAA South Central Region Tournament. With the victory, St. Mary's is now 40-18 this season, while UNO finished the 2010 season at 32-20. Kirk Jewasko was just named all-region while Alfredo Caballero recently was MVP in the Heartland Conference tournament and both pitched up to their billings Thursday as Incarnate Word defeated Emporia State in the first round of the NCAA D-II South Central regional tournament. With the 6-1 win over number three seed Emporia State the number four Cardinals are in the winner’s bracket for the first time in three regional tries.
