The Oklahoma Panhandle State volleyball team began the 2010 season by playing well over the weekend and also spending a great deal of time on a bus (from Goodwell to Shawnee, Oklahoma—then from Shawnee to Commerce, Texas—then from Commerce back home to Goodwell . . . over 850 miles). The Hilltoppers split their final two matches of the Lady Buff Classis on Saturday. Against East Central, St. Edward’s swept the Lady Tigers in three games, 25-17, 25-10, and 25-17. Facing Central Oklahoma in the wrap up of the tournament, the Hilltoppers fell in five close matches, 25-27, 25-12, 25-12, 21-25, and 12-15. The Lady Patriots Volleyball Team opened their season in Canyon, Texas, on Friday evening as they took part in the Lady Buffs Classic. After dropping their first set of the day, DBU won six consecutive sets, as they defeated Eastern New Mexico, 3-1, and East Central, 3-0. Whether on the left, the right or in the middle of the court, St. Mary's University outside hitter/middle blocker Stephanie Proske happily went wherever the Rattlers needed her last season. Mere seconds into Thursday night’s season opener, St. Mary’s junior deep setter Stephanie Flores went after a loose ball by diving head first onto the hardwood at Bill Greehey Arena. It was great effort, to be sure, but all but reactive for the Rattlers these days. The Dallas Baptist University Lady Patriot Volleyball Team partnered with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to take part in a service project with the Dallas Independent School District on Saturday, August 28. Over 205 middle school girls from DISD participated in the instructional clinic, free of charge, held at the Kincaid Fieldhouse in Dallas. The Lady Patriots taught volleyball skills to campers through different stations in the gym, but were also afforded the opportunity to share their faith athletes. Strong teamwork many times equates to strong success in athletics, and the Oklahoma Panhandle State volleyball team has also translated a strong team effort into academic success, by virtue of being named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Academic Team. The St. Edward’s University Hilltoppers have been selected to win the Heartland Conference championship for the 2010 season. There will be seven teams fighting for the conference championship during the 2010 season. Picked to finish second and third respectively is Dallas Baptist and Texas-Permian Basin. St. Edward's volleyball players Michelle Hundt and Courtney Trevino won the annual Heartland Conference Sand Volleyball Doubles Tournament Saturday at Fatso's Sports Garden.
