NU Men’s Cross Country Wins Heartland Conference Championship

WICHITA – The Newman men's cross country team placed five runners in the top 10 to cruise to the Heartland Conference Championship on Saturday (Nov. 8) at Cessna Activity Center. The Jets totaled a score of 31 to defeat Oklahoma Christian with their score of 60. It's the second team title in three years, as the Jets won the conference in 2012.
 
Jacob Wallace, Kenneth Kimani, Nick Martin, Joey Kenneson and Kenton Weber were all in the top 10, earning All-Heartland Conference honors. Mark Sutton placed 16th to earn All-Heartland Conference Honorable Mention.
 
Wallace, a sophomore from Andale, Kan., was in the front pack of three runners for most of the race, however, he dropped back behind Rogers State's Baylor Harvey and OC's Bryant Keirns to finish in third place with a time of 25:43.
 
The group of Kimani, Martin and Kenneson finished in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. The three were 4 seconds apart with Kimani running a 25:15, Martin a 26:18 and Kennson a 26:19.
 
Kenton Weber ran with the pack early, but fell back slightly to finish in 10th. He ran a time of 26:31. His place was the fifth runner for the Jets, giving them the score of 31 and the team title.
 
Sutton finished in 16th place with a time of 26:41, and Tristyn Villa ran a 27:08 for 24th place.
 
RSU's Baylor Harvey won the race with a time of 24:45 to claim the individual Heartland Conference Championship. OC's Bryant Keirns finished in second at 24:48. Harvey, Keirns and Wallace were the lead pack for most of the race.
 
After the Jets were the Eagles with a score of 60. RSU totaled a score of 72 for third place. In the fourth position was Dallas Baptist at 118. After DBU was Texas-Permian Basin with 141 points. UA Fort Smith placed sixth a score of 149, and Texas A&M International was seven in 167. Lubbock Christian totaled 234 points for eighth place, and Oklahoma Panhandle State was ninth with 267.
 
The Jets will now travel to the NCAA Regional on Nov. 22 in Denver, Colo.
